NFL Week 8 / NCAA Week 9
We have some exciting news to report here at Xtra Point Football as we are proud to announce that we became a panelist in the Blog Poll Power Rankings this past week. We are honored and humbled to be a part of the composition of this prestigious poll. So last week was our first week here in our new digs as part of the Bloguin Network. Not a too bad as we picked 6 games and won 5.
Again, for those of you new to what's going on here, each week I pick college and football games using real money and the winnings at the end of the year will go to charity. We started with a pot of $1,000 and YTD, after six weeks we have $1,630 in the account, a return so far of 63.30%. Slow and steady is the method here, we don't bet the ranch on anything. If you would like to see the picks from each week you can check out our archives both here and from our old site (see the main menu at the top of the page).
As for the charity, feel free to contact us with your request of where you want it to go. The charity with the most nominations will get the funds. Assuming we have more than $1,000 in winnings (fingers crossed) we'll send 70% to the top nominated charity and 30% to the second most nominated charity. That's plan at the moment, if we hit a home run we can certainly spread the wealth some more.
At the moment here are the leading nominees. We will take nominations until NFL season concludes. It's still early so please vote for the charity of your choice. It doesn't have to be a major charity, just a legit one. So if you have a cause you want to support, speak-up. I'll update the voting each week as we go and we will list any charity getting more than 100 votes.
579 - Jimmy Foundation for Cancer Research 548 - The 911 Fund 341 - Salvation Army 304 - United Way 297 - American Cancer Society 168 - American National Red Cross 17...................... other charities with less than 100 nominations to date I do in fact do this for a living, so I'd like to think I can spin this thing into some nice donations. Remember, we are using a $1,000 betting pot to start out with so we are up 63.30% after 7 NFL weeks (winnings go to charity).
Results Week 1 = + $77.50 Week 2 = + $72.50 Week 3 = + $20.00 Week 4 = - $12.00 Week 5 = + $129.50 Week 6 = + $145.00 Week 7 = + $197.50
Total = + $630.00 after 7 weeks. So it's on to this week's picks! $75 - Cincinnati -15 (-110) The Cincinnati program is perhaps the most improved major program in the nation. Syracuse is no match. (I had the exact same reasoning last week and picked them -17)
$50 - Miami, FL -7 (-110) I just don't see how Wake Forest can hang with them for 4 qtrs. At best they Wake keeps it close until the 4th qtr, but Miami pulls away in this one.
$150 - Minnesota MONEY LINE (+160) The entire world will be focused on this game and I am too. But I'm focused on it for a different reason. I don't see how Green Bay is able to protect Aaron Rodgers. I think Rodgers is a wonderful QB but you have to be standing up to throw the ball. They played in week 4 and Minnesota had 8 sacks! Jared Allen had 4.5 all by himself. The Packers are a passing team and it's not like the Vikings won't be looking for the screen. Personally I think Favre is a selfish dope, but I think he'll play well (he's actually played very well this year) and get a victory over his former team.
$50 - Colts -12.5 (-110) It's not that I don't like the 49ers, I think Mike Singletary has them on the right path. But I think that Alex Smith will be tested in his first start in quite some time and until I actually see someone with my own eyes stop Peyton Manning, I'm not going to bet that it will happen.
$50 - Chargers -11.5 (-110) I'd be surprised if the Raiders can put up 10 pts (I'm being generous) and I think that the Chargers score at least 28.
$75 - Giants PICK (-115) I can't see the NY Giants loosing 3 games in a row. I know The Eagles won a game last week but it was against the Redskins. Before that, they lost to the Raiders. Now they are PICK against the Giants? It's a divisional game and these teams know each other well, but I just don't see the Eagles winning the game. - Robert Fairchild
