The Five Most Baffling Events From NFL Week Nine E-mail

giantslose4Week nine of the 2009 season included an unusually large amount of strange occurrences that we haven't seen during the previous seven weeks. Yes, the Colts and the Saints remain undefeated at the end of the day. And yes, the Tom Brady-Randy Moss connection looked as good as ever against Miami. And yes, the Lions lost their seventh game of the season.

But did anyone expect the Giants to lose their fourth consecutive game at the Meadowlands? Or what about Vince Young winning on the road in only his second start of the season? And we even saw some déjà vu when DeAngelo Hall got in a fight during the game in Atlanta, just in a Redskin uniform.

With that said, here are the five most baffling events of week nine...........

lj15. Kansas City fans voiced their opinions about the possibility of running back Larry Johnson passing Priest Holmes as the all-time leading rusher in franchise history. Fans simply do not like or respect Larry Johnson and requested that he not be given the chance to break the record. And the Chiefs organization actually responded in the best way fans could have asked for.

Has a team ever responded to the needs of the fans so quickly and with an issue as sensitive as the future of a disgruntled pro-bowl running back? It's as if the Chiefs never even hesitated to let him go. They heard what the fans had to say and followed their instructions (only if Dan Snyder would listen to his fans).

This short story doesn't end there.

Speaking of Dan Snyder and the Redskins, Washington was one of the first teams to be thrown in the rumor box of teams likely to sign him (because that is exactly what will fix the problems in D.C.)

4. Green Bay, after a home loss to Brett Favre and the Vikings the week before, traveled down to Tampa Bay (a winless team) and built an 11-point lead in the fourth quarter... and lost...

Uh... Really? (I am very bitter about this one since I am now out of my survivor league)

This loss is inexcusable for the Packers. One would think that after a loss to Brett Favre that Green Bay would show the intensity and the emotion necessary to close out a fourth quarter league. Especially when they're going up against a team with ZERO wins.

Not only were the Buccaneers winless, but their quarterback Josh Freeman was only starting in the second game of his career. And the Packers made him look good as the defense squandered an 11-point lead and ended up losing by even more after an Aaron Rogers interception was returned for a touchdown. Simply unacceptable and just mind-boggling.

3. Did Matt Millen really say that Ben Roethlisberger is not an elite quarterback in the NFL on Monday Night Football? Did he even go on to say that "there is more to quarterbacking than championships?"

What planet does Mr. Millen live on?

That's just one of the reasonable questions that come up from that outrageous statement.

Does anyone really take anything Matt Millen says seriously? After what he did to the Detroit Lions, how much credibility does Millen have, if any? Why did ESPN ever even consider giving him a job?

Big Ben is the best in the NFL at extending the play. The Steelers team that won the Super Bowl last year did not have a good running game and a horrible offensive line. Big Ben was the offense. He was unstoppable throughout the entire season and post season last year. Big Ben won the Super Bowl last year with a magnificent final drive. And judging from the Monday Night Football game against the Broncos, he is clearly an elite quarterback in the NFL

And isn't quarterbacking is all about winning championships (or at least the most important part...)?

2. At the beginning of the season, nobody could have possibly thought that the Bengals would sweep the Ravens. Maybe they could get lucky once against their division rivals. But a sweep? Never.

The Bengals shocked everybody and swept the Baltimore Ravens on Sunday and made it look pretty easy. It wasn't the Cincinnati offense that did it either. It wasn't the Palmer-Ochocinco connection (although it looked very good). Cedric Benson had more to do with it than anyone else on offense.

But nonetheless, the Bengals defense held the new, high-powered Ravens offense to zero points through the first three quarters. The Bengals D intercepted Joe Flacco twice, held the Ravens to just 55 rushing yards and built a 17-point lead very early in the game.

Cedric Benson rushed for 117 yards against the often-unstoppable Baltimore defense. Benson is the only running back to rush for over 100 yards against Baltimore... and he's done it twice.

1. It is already very very very weird that Terrell Owens currently plays for the Buffalo Bills. That was one of the strangest things to happen in the offseason. After week nine and Philadelphia's home loss to Dallas, one of the top headlines was about something different in the city of brotherly love.

vick4The new rumor is that Michael Vick's next team might also be the Buffalo Bills. Tony Dungy, Vick's mentor and adviser, said on Sunday Night Football that Buffalo might lure in the backup quarterback for the Eagles next year.

If I am Vick, I am hoping this does not happen. Though I am sure he is eager to become a starting NFL quarterback again, Buffalo is not the right place for him.

Going to Buffalo is like being exiled to football jail. Just ask T.O. I bet he's having a blast.

The last thing Vick needs to do is team up with players like T.O and the recently suspended Marhsawn Lynch. He can do better than that. But how weird would that be?

Five years ago, nobody could have predicted that Michael Vick and Terrell Owens would be in a Bills uniform. Only time will tell. - Michael Klopman
