Why do so many football coaches feel they have to be fat to be good? E-mail

Do you think fat coaches feel it's necessary to be that way in order to properly do their job? Vince Lombardi wasn't fat. Neither was Bill Walsh. Bill Belicheck isn't. A lot of great coaches were / are in shape. What are these guys thinking?

What do you think Maryland's Ralph Friedgen is doing in this picture? I know. He's saying, "When the hell is McDonald's going to bring back the McRib!?!?" Maybe if he concentrated on the game plan in the evenings instead of raiding the refrigerator they'd get into a decent bowl game.

How about Mark Mangino from Kansas, what's his deal? This portly fella looks like a cross between an overweight infant and Jabba the Hut. To say he has a weight problem would be like saying Mel Gibson has a minor beef with Jews. How is he still standing? His arteries have to be 100% closed. He's one of those motivational coaches, but apparently not too motivated himself. I'm guessing he doesn't watch ‘The Biggest Looser.'

And Charlie Weis of Notre Dame (for a few more days.) The look on his face in this picture leads me to believe that someone just clued him in about the abnormally large growth he has both above AND below his belt. They profiled him on 60 minutes a few years ago when he first took the job and they said he had his stomach stapled.... What happened? Did they staple it to the dinner table?

And the NFL has them too. Eric Mangini could use a salad. Tom Cable and Andy Reid obviously pick between meals. But Rex Ryan, what the hell is going on there? When to you think the last time was that he saw HIS weenie? Even if he looked in the mirror it would be a tough chore. His brother is a big dude but he's not obese like that? Look at him; he's talking to Sanchez about the Hot Dog isn't he. He probably wants the low-down on the fixin's. He looks like he's going to spontaneously combust!

I really don't understand it; these guys have access to the most state of the art exercise equipment, trainers and nutritionist every day when they show up for work. Some things in life are just hard to understand I guess. - Gregory Shapiro

If you haven't voted in our poll on the site yet please do so. We are trying to get a feel for how our readers are looking at the game of NCAA Football so we can write about things they want to hear. The poll question is, "Do you think the NCAA should have a Playoff to determine the National Champion rather than the BCS / Bowl System?" - Please vote.
