The NY Jets left a lot of points on the board last night. Statistically, they outplayed the Bills in every way and yet still had to get two crucial first downs in the final minute to prevent the Bills from having a chance to win the game on their last drive. One of the reasons was simply failing to execute effortless tasks like catching the ball in wide open spaces with no one around them.
No one doubts the talent potential of Braylon Edwards, if you saw his leaping 27-yard grab and, a few minutes later, the power move for the touchdown, you know what I mean. However Edwards, who has been known to have a case of the dropsy's now and then, dropped a simple slant pattern that apparently hit him in a bad spot, ‘the hands' and also dropped what should have been an 84-yard touchdown pass with no one within 20-yards of him (literally) and that's inexcusable.
In the NFL every play matters and the opportunities where you have a chance to walk into the end zone from 84 yards away because of a blown coverage only happen maybe once a year (if that) and that play has to be made.
Edwards was quoted as saying, "I lost it in the lights." You lost it in the lights? Look at the picture, YOUR EYE'S WERE CLOSED! OPEN YOUR EYES!
Rex Ryan when asked about the play after the game said, "He either needs to put Stick-um on his helmet or catch it with his hands."
On the Sliding Sanchez
During the short week of practice the Jets asked the NY York Yankees to send over a coach to work with Mark Sanchez on sliding. Sliding? Yes that's right, sliding. Instead of diving head first as Sanchez always does, the Jets wanted to protect their $44.5 million investment and want him to slide so he doesn't get hurt.
On Tuesday, Yankees manager Joe Girardi himself drove on over to Florham Park, New Jersey and worked with Sanchez teaching him how to slide. What did he do, teach him the head first slide? Does that look like a slide to you?
The entire point of Sanchez sliding was to prevent the $44.5 million man from getting injured. What the hell is this guy doing? What was the point of having Girardi waste his time to come over and work with him if he wasn't going to do it?
The Jets won the game last night at the Rogers Centre, 19-13, to keep alive their faint playoff hopes, but the season could hinge on the outcome of an MRI exam Friday morning. Rex Ryan said he's optimistic that it's "just a sprain" and that the QB he called a "knucklehead" would be able to play the next game, but there was an ominous feeling in the locker room. The fear, according to two players, is that Sanchez will be lost for the season with a torn meniscus.
"It just doesn't feel right, that's for sure," said Sanchez, who hobbled to his postgame news conference with a brace on his knee.
Sanchez, in a moment of attempted humor, sent out an apology to Girardi. Ryan, who was in no mood for joking, was furious with Sanchez for not heeding the advice to slide responded, "I love the kid, but he has to grow up and understand that he represents our entire organization."
Going Forward
The Jets who are now 6-6 are still mathematically alive for the playoffs but need a ton of help. It's not even worth calculating the possible different combinations and permutations for another two weeks but we know this, in order to have a shot they need to win out.
Mark Sanchez is scheduled to have an MRI today on his knee (the good knee, the one he doesn't wear a brace on.) Maybe they should bring in Ricky Henderson this week.... Oh wait, he was a head first guy. Well perhaps Lou Brock. - Mike Cardano
