Coaching Stability Is Scarce In The NFL E-mail

reidWith the news today that Andy Reid has signed a contract extension through 2003 it got me thinking about NFL franchises and their organizational stability. We are in such a ‘NOW' society where, "what have you done for me lately" literally means right at this moment. Coaches just seem to come and go in what seems to be a never ending carousel of replacing themselves (and usually showing up somewhere else.)

Remember the old days when the coach was the face of the franchise? I'm not talking Curly Lambeau or George Halas old. Think of the more recent guys. Tom Landry (Cowboys) Don Shula (Dolphins), Bill Walsh (49ers), Dan Reeves (Broncos), Chuck Noll (Steelers), Marv Levy (Bills).

With the firing of Mike Shanahan in Denver last year and Mike Holmgren's retirement from the Seattle Seahawks, the list of the NFL's coaches that have long tenure took a hit. The departure of those two coaches left just 10 teams that have had the same coach for 5 or more seasons. And, there are only two coaches that have been with the same team since the 1990s.

Jeff Fisher, Tennessee Titans, 1994 - Fisher was promoted from defensive coordinator with 6 weeks remaining. He was retained in 1995 and the team drafted Steve McNair as its quarterback of the future. He has won three division titles and one AFC Championship.

Andy Reid, Philadelphia Eagles, 1999 - Reid has won 5 division titles in 10 years as a coach. The Eagles didn't win a single division title in the 10 seasons prior to him coming to Philadelphia.

Bill Belichick, New England Patriots, 2000 - Belichick was also named head coach of the New York Jets the same year but turned it down one day later. Last year his team missed the playoffs this year for the first time since 2003.
Thank you Andy and the Philadelphia Eagles franchise for keeping some stability in the game. While the Eagles have not won the big one, we all know that some of that has to do with luck. The Eagles are competitive each and every year and if they stay that way one of these year's things will break their way. - Adam Foster

If you haven't voted in our poll on the site yet please do so. We are trying to get a feel for how our readers are looking at the game of NCAA Football so we can write about things they want to hear. The poll question is, "Do you think the NCAA should have a Playoff to determine the National Champion rather than the BCS / Bowl System?" Please vote.
