Once again, the Washington Redskins have confounded their fans with a free agent signing. This time, the Redskins inked in Rex Grossman to the league minimum salary, plus incentives. Right now just about everyone is wondering why in the world the Redskins would sign Grossman? Why would Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan think anything of Grossman?
Well don't panic Redskins fans. It's not a big deal. In fact, this might be great news for Redskins fans.
As most football fans know, the Redskins have plenty of problems. The most important problem that they have had is the offensive line, a problem the front office hasn't addressed in a very long time (causing most Redskins fans to suffer from brain aneurysms).
While the 2010 offseason provides an opportunity to have a fresh start and build on the offensive line, experts are projecting Washington to pick quarterback Jimmy Clausen out of Notre Dame.
I am going to say this one more time (and I apologize for repeating this over and over again). If the Redskins spend the fourth pick overall in this year's NFL draft on Clausen, the Redskins will accomplish nothing and the Redskins will be failures once again. The quarterback position simply isn't the problem.
While the case may in fact be that, Jason Campbell isn't much of a long-term solution, that doesn't mean the organization needs to spend a first-round draft pick on a quarterback in a draft when the quarterbacks aren't the best football players in the draft. Picking a quarterback with the fourth pick is just not the way to go.
The signing of Rex Grossman shows me that maybe the Redskins are indeed moving in the right direction. If they make the correct move and pick offensive tackle Russell Okung from Oklahoma State, this will finally prove that Dan Snyder has hired a competent staff to take care of football operations.
One more time: THE REDSKINS MUST DRAFT OKUNG; it addresses their most important hole on the team. Okung could be the starting left tackle for a long time and would give the fans hope. Last but not least, drafting Okung might help Campbell actually stay on his feet for more than half of each game.
The way it looks as of today, Grossman should be the backup quarterback in 2010. What's wrong with that? To me, that is a lot better than having Todd Collins as the backup. At least Grossman has played in a Super Bowl. Doesn't that end the Grossman/Collins debate immediately? And if this leads to the Redskins drafting Okung, then it will finally be confirmed that the franchise is in good hands. - Michael Klopman
