Rex Grossman to the Washington Redskins - what it means E-mail

rexgrossmanOnce again, the Washington Redskins have confounded their fans with a free agent signing. This time, the Redskins inked in Rex Grossman to the league minimum salary, plus incentives. Right now just about everyone is wondering why in the world the Redskins would sign Grossman? Why would Bruce Allen and Mike Shanahan think anything of Grossman?

Well don't panic Redskins fans. It's not a big deal. In fact, this might be great news for Redskins fans.

As most football fans know, the Redskins have plenty of problems. The most important problem that they have had is the offensive line, a problem the front office hasn't addressed in a very long time (causing most Redskins fans to suffer from brain aneurysms).

While the 2010 offseason provides an opportunity to have a fresh start and build on the offensive line, experts are projecting Washington to pick quarterback Jimmy Clausen out of Notre Dame.

I am going to say this one more time (and I apologize for repeating this over and over again). If the Redskins spend the fourth pick overall in this year's NFL draft on Clausen, the Redskins will accomplish nothing and the Redskins will be failures once again. The quarterback position simply isn't the problem.

okungWhile the case may in fact be that, Jason Campbell isn't much of a long-term solution, that doesn't mean the organization needs to spend a first-round draft pick on a quarterback in a draft when the quarterbacks aren't the best football players in the draft. Picking a quarterback with the fourth pick is just not the way to go.

The signing of Rex Grossman shows me that maybe the Redskins are indeed moving in the right direction. If they make the correct move and pick offensive tackle Russell Okung from Oklahoma State, this will finally prove that Dan Snyder has hired a competent staff to take care of football operations.

One more time: THE REDSKINS MUST DRAFT OKUNG; it addresses their most important hole on the team. Okung could be the starting left tackle for a long time and would give the fans hope. Last but not least, drafting Okung might help Campbell actually stay on his feet for more than half of each game.

The way it looks as of today, Grossman should be the backup quarterback in 2010. What's wrong with that? To me, that is a lot better than having Todd Collins as the backup. At least Grossman has played in a Super Bowl. Doesn't that end the Grossman/Collins debate immediately? And if this leads to the Redskins drafting Okung, then it will finally be confirmed that the franchise is in good hands. - Michael Klopman

In response to Mr. Klopmans remarks on Grossman
written by Da_bears79, March 19, 2010
Sir I have one thing to add to your comments about Grossman. Sexy Rexy will beat out Campbell during training camp and show exactly why he should be the starter. You should do a little bit of research before commenting about Grossmans ability to lead a team to the Super bowl. This guy has a Sex cannon for an arm. All he needs is a good Offensive Line to block for him and give him time to unleash the beast. Thats all he ask for. Bears OL was horrible after the Super Bowl era that ended for them, and Texans surely provided the time and blocking by their OL men. So why on earth get Grossman you say??? Well hey let me just summarize it up for you in a few sentences. Kyle Shannahan who was the Offensive Coordinator for the TExans knew and coached Grossman. He knows what Grossman is capable of doing and knowing the playbook, so he has a lot of confidence in him, thats a major plus if you ask me or anyone for Grossman to win the starting job as QB for the Redskns. Washington should be proud of having such a under rated Qb as Grossman and when he takes you to the promise land please soak in what I have said previously about him Mr. Klopman!!!

That's a bold prediction. I'm hoping they stick with Campbell. But Rexy is much better than Todd Collins so that is comforting. But although Campbell has looked bad, he still put up solid numbers with the worst O-line in the league and a horrible offense around him.

Lets just wait and see 4 months until camp so hopefully Grossman attends all the teams workouts and extra practices works out and shows his teammates he serious about starting he does that I think he has a shot at starting if he beats out Campbell

Mike, In 1970 the skins hired George Allan(the GM dad) to save the team.the very first thing he did was get a QB that was only known as the guy who fumbled the ball Marshal ran the wrong way for a safty. The QB was bill Kilmer and when Sonny went down, old billy came through. So I'm not all that confounded. I sure hope your right about drafting O-line first.
